Sam Bahadur is a 2023 Indian biographical war drama film. The film is based on the life of Sam Manekshaw, India’s first field marshal. The film is directed by Meghna Gulzar and stars Vicky Kaushal in the title role. The film’s running time is 2 hours and 25 minutes.
Sam Bahadur is a tribute to India’s first Field Marshal and a legendary Army General, Sam HFJ Manekshaw, MC. From Burma campaign during World War II, Sino-Indian War, to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 that created Bangladesh, his illustrious career shaped India’s borders. The film chronicles the dynamic life of this no-nonsense Officer, also known as ‘Sam Bahadur’ by the soldiers he led.
In 2017 Meghna Gulzar narrated the story of the biopic on Sam Manekshaw on the sets of Raazi which she planned to make her next film. Kaushal impressed by the idea decided that he would play the character.[10] She then went for years of extensive research and writing collaborating with Bhavani Iyer and Shantanu Srivastava, also meeting with family members of Sam Manekshaw.[11][12] The film marks the second collaboration between Gulzar and Kaushal. In 2021, the film was announced by RSVP Movies on the 107th birth anniversary of late Sam Manekshaw.[13][14]
In December 2021, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra joined the cast.[15][16]Neeraj Kabi joined the cast in September 2022 to portray the role of Jawaharlal Nehru marking his second collaboration with Gulzar after Talvar.[17] Kaushal has gone through extensive training in the army under the guidance of the Indian Army’s 6 Sikh Regiment in preparing for his role.[18] Kaushal in an interview with Film Companion revealed that the character would be his toughest onscreen role to date.[19] The film will not have junior artists and instead real-life army personnel and people from the Defence Force have been cast.[20]
The music of the film is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy while lyrics are written by Gulzar. Background score is composed by Ketan Sodha.[31] The first single titled “Badhte Chalo” was released on 13 November 2023.[32] The second single titled “Banda” will release on 22 November 2023.
Sam Bahadur received positive reviews from critics. Anuj Kumar of The Hindu wrote, “When the screenplay flattens, Vicky does the heavy lifting to keep the mission on course and after a point, the screenplay does become a series of snapshots of his long list of accomplishments set to a rousing background score, but Sam Bahadur has enough firepower to keep us invested.”[39]Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave a rating 2.5/5 and wrote “It’s hard to play a character so closely without becoming a caricature, but Kaushal becomes Sam Bahadur.”[40]
Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave a rating of 3.5/5 and wrote “It would be easy to describe Sam Bahadur as a Vicky Kaushal show because it is who dominates every major scene in the film, but Meghna Gulzar balances between ambition and restraint, neither the spirited central performance nor its emotional payoff would have been quite as remarkable.”[41]Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com gave a rating of 2.5/5 and wrote, “Nothing that the movie tells isn’t already available in the public domain.”[42]
Catherine Bray of The Guardian stated “The incidents and set-pieces are neat, but the structure is episodic. It’s a perennial problem for biopics; how to give events the momentum of fiction when the underlying narrative is fact.”[43]
The film was released alongside Animal on 1st December 2023. On its first day, the film collected ₹6.25 crore, the second day ₹9 crore and the third day ₹10.30 crore. As of 4 December 2023, the film had collected ₹29.05 crore in India and ₹38.41 crore worldwide.[5][44]
Sam Manekshaw was the Chief of the Army Staff during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. He was one of the most decorated officers in the Indian army, serving for over four decades and fighting in five wars.

In Kalimpong, Maya D’Souza is a divorced, single mother who works at a cafeteria. Naren Vyas is a reclusive, but brilliant mathematics teacher, who lives next door to Maya and Tara (Maya’s daughter). Naren is solemn and introverted, and his morning exchanges with Maya from whose cafeteria he buys lunch, is the brightest part of his day.
When Ajit, Maya’s abusive ex-husband & a policeman, shows up one night to extort money from Maya, threatening both her and Tara, the situation quickly escalates into violence and Ajit is killed by mother and daughter on the apartment floor.
Overhearing the commotion from his room and deducing that Ajit has been killed, Naren offers his help to the mother and daughter. He not only disposes the body, but also plots the cover-up step-by-step.
Inspector Karan Anand, a former classmate of Naren, is assigned to track the missing Ajit, which leads him to Kalimpong. There he runs into his old classmate Naren, along with burned remains with Ajit’s credentials. Karan’s suspicions immediately fall to Maya. Autopsy shows that the murder occurred on the 10th. Maya and Tara have a detailed alibi. Karan tries his best to poke holes in it.
Unable to poke any holes in Maya’s holiday, he is ready to go back. Maya’s employee tells Karan about Naren’s crush on Maya. Karan becomes suspicious of Naren, who had previously claimed to not know Maya very well. Karan finds incriminating evidence against Naren, who does not have an alibi for the 10th.
Maya apologizes to Naren when she finds out that her employee told Karan that Naren has a crush on Maya. She told him that she clarified that there is nothing romantic between the two. A heartbroken Naren goes to the police station and confesses to Ajit’s murder, saying he did it at Maya’s behest.
Naren starts to frame himself as delusional. He has set up evidence against himself. Maya confirms the evidence, including cryptic messages sent to Maya. The murder weapon is also found in Naren’s house. Karan accepts that Naren killed Ajit in a delusional state to protect Maya and Tara.
A guilt-ridden Maya asks Naren why he took the blame for her. Naren tells her that he had spent 10 years of his life on one of the Millennium Prize Problems, which he solved. However someone else has reached the solution 46 hours before him. Depressed, he was going to commit suicide. Right then, Maya had knocked on Naren’s door, giving him a new lease on life.
In a flashback, it shows how Naren covered up the murder. Since Ajit’s murder occurred on the 9th and Maya did not have an alibi for the 9th, he killed a homeless man on the 10th on a day Maya and Tara had meticulously created an alibi. Karan had previously noted that the burned remains had a smashed face and burned fingerprints to hide Ajit’s identity so the dead body would not be connected to Maya. In reality, it was done to make sure that no one would realize that the dead body was not Ajit’s.
Naren is sentenced to 25 years in prison, which he used to solve another of the Millennium Prize Problems.
Kareena Kapoor Khan as Maya D’Souza née Soneeya Tawde, waitress at Tifin lounge and Bar, Kalimpong. Teacher Naren Vyas’s and Inspector Karan Anand’s love interest.
Jaideep Ahlawat as Naren Vyas aka Naru, gold medalist and PhD in mathematics, maths teacher at Mount George school, Kalimpong. An expert practitioner and Red belt in Jujitsu. College mate of Karan at KG Somaya Science, Arts and commerce college, Bombay.
Vijay Varma as Inspector Karan Anand, Chief investigating officer of Mumbai police in disappearance case of ASI Mhatre, expert practitioner of Kurash, college mate of Naren Vyas.
On 25 August 2023, the teaser with a release date was announced by Netflix.[15] The makers planned to release the film on 21 September 2023, which was the birthday of the film’s lead actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan.[16] The film was selected to be screened at the Himalayan Film Festival 2023.[17]
During 18–24 September 2023, Jaane Jaan was the most-watched non-English film on Netflix globally with 8.1 million views.[20][21] The film had the biggest opening weekend viewership for an Indian film with 18.8 million viewing hours from 8.1 million views.[22] It was trending at number-one in 13 countries and was among the top ten most-watched films across 52 countries.[23]
Jaane Jaan received positive reviews from the film critics with particular praise directed towards the performance of the main cast.[24][25] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 75% based on 8 reviews.[26]
Kapoor Khan (left) and Ahlawat (right) received praise for their performances.
Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV rated 3.5 out of 5 stars praising the plot of the film and called, “With the writer-director, the technicians, the music team and the actors at their very best, Jaane Jaan is an all-round triumph.”[27] Devesh Sharma from Filmfare rated 3.5/5 stars and wrote, “The film rests hugely on the shoulders of its three principal protagonists. You tend to sympathise with the protagonists, wanting them to win, wanting them to stretch their bluff till the very end. Watch the film for the masterful performances by Varma, Ahlawat and Kapoor Khan”.[28] Rishil Jogani from Pinkvilla rated 3.5/5 stars and opined, “Jaane Jaan is a great adaptation of the book, ‘The Devotion Of Suspect X’. It is a must watch for those who enjoy films in the thriller space. It is also strongly recommended for all those who haven’t read the book or watched the Japanese adaptation of the book.”[29]
Sukanya Verma from Rediff rated 3.5/5 stars and opined, “In Jaane Jaan, the director sets the rules where subtext is spoiler and everybody must reveal themselves without disclosing anything. All his three lead actors rise to that challenge spectacularly and share numerous stories to be read in between the lines.”[30] Anvita Singh from India Today rated 3.5/5 stars and stated, “When you have a solid screenplay to rely on, it is half the battle won for everyone involved. Then all you need to do is cast the right actors. In ‘Jaane Jaan’s‘ case, both these demands were met by Sujoy Ghosh ably.”[31]Bollywood Hungama rated the film 3 stars and stated, “Jaane Jaan is a gripping film and works due to the execution, unexpected twists and turns and terrific performances of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma.”[32]
Times of India rated with 3/5 stars and wrote, “If you have an affinity for the kind of cinema that exudes a melancholic, enigmatic, and contemplative atmosphere, Jaane Jaan will strike a chord with you. However, the film falls short of keeping up with the grip and fast pace of the book that was unputdownable.”[33] Lachmi Deb Roy from First Post rated 3/5 stars and wrote, “The story is unique, engaging and the best thing about it is the minute details that he has paid attention to starting from the look of the apartments to the look of the actors. Kapoor have done justice to her role trying to show the hardships of a single mother and the stress that she goes through because of her dark past. both Ahlawat and Varma have slayed their roles to perfection.

film making course making dream say of actor life without persuation of life
Working as an Actor means bringing to life the scenes and words of a script both in auditions and on set. However, for any Actor to achieve a long-lasting and successful career, they must find a work-life balance that supports their craft and allows them to maintain their mental and emotional health.
The acting job is demanding. Long hours, night and weekend work are frequent. It requires travel, sometimes abroad (tours, filming, etc.). Having a flexible schedule and physical and mental endurance is essential.
Bhaskar Sharma and his cousin Janardhan “Jana” visit a small town in Arunachal Pradesh for a road-building project. Two natives, Jomin and Panda, show them around. One night in the forest, Bhaskar is bitten by a wolf on his rear end. Dr. Anika, the local veterinarian, saves him.
The next day, Bhaskar begins to see changes in himself, like heightened senses of smell and hearing, and communicating with animals. Meanwhile, the locals and tribals are opposed to the idea of cutting down the trees to build roads. Two people involved in the project are discovered dead. Bite marks on the bodies indicate that they were killed by an animal. Panda claims the killings are the work of a werewolf (Yapum).
It is revealed that Bhaskar really is the perpetrator of the crimes; he has been transforming into a werewolf every night since being bitten, and has no control over it. The duo decide to confine Bhaskar in a remote location so he does not succumb. However, a local cop learns the truth, threatening to divulge Bhaskar’s name to the town. The wolf that had bitten Bhaskar appears and kills the cop. The group goes to an elderly doctor for treatment; he informs them that the only way for Bhaskar to be cured is for him to be bitten by the same wolf on a new moon night in the same location.
Bhaskar goes to the forest with Jana and Jomin to be bitten again. The werewolf is revealed to be Dr. Anika. She explains that she was bitten by a wolf a century ago and has been the forest’s protector since, murdering anybody who attempted to destroy it. She had bitten Bhaskar with the intention of killing him, but spared him because she sensed his kindness within. She advises him to avoid deforestation.
Anika is shot down and captured by the local police. Bhaskar transforms and rescues her but she succumbs to her injuries and falls off a cliff, leaving him heartbroken. He decides to construct roads around the borders of the forest, leaving the trees unharmed.
In a mid-credits scene, Vicky and Bittu come to meet their long-lost friend, Jana, who had previously been possessed by Stree, and has since been staying away from them, cutting off contact to study for the UPSC exam for IAS. They ask for Jana’s help in solving the Stree mystery. Bhaskar transforms into a werewolf and appears, terrifying them.
The producer of film, Dinesh Vijan, confirmed that Bhediya is part of his horror comedy universe consisting of films like Stree, Roohi and Munjha.[9][10] Munjha will be the prequel to 2018 film Stree. The shooting for Bhediya is done in the regions of Arunachal Pradesh‘s Ziro (Lower Subansiri), Sagalee (Papum Pare) and parts of Pakke-Kessang district– over a span of two months, from March to April 2021.[11] Over 70 percent of the artists in Bhediya are from Arunachal Pradesh, including a lead character, named Jomin. Besides that, Arunachal rapper K4 Kheko will also feature in the film.[12] He has also sung and written the lyrics for the theme song of the film.[13]
During the shooting schedule, Varun Dhawan and his wife, designer Natasha Dalal donated ₹1 lakh (US$1,300) to the victims of a massive fire in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap and Longding districts in April 2021.[14]Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu also visited the set in Ziro.[15][16] The shooting schedule in Arunachal Pradesh completed on 19 April 2021.[17] The film was wrapped up on 10 July 2021.[18][19][20]
The music of the film is composed by Sachin-Jigar while the lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The first single titled “Thumkeshwari” was released on 28 October 2022.[22] The second single audio titled “Apna Bana Le was released on 5 November 2022 while it’s video was released on 7 November 2022.
Six months after the theatrical release, it released on Jio Cinema for streaming, for free, on 26 May 2023 in Hindi and the dubbed versions of Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.[27]
Bhediya received positive reviews from critics.[28] Amandeep Naang of ABP News rated the film 4 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya is a mad ride of a horror-comedy which feels different in the current climate of remakes, thrillers and period dramas”.[29] Siby Jeyya of India Herald rated the film 4 out of 5 stars and wrote “The impact of the film’s visuals is by far its most noteworthy aspect. The vfx are incredible, and cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee has masterfully captured the dark and fascinating realm of werewolves with the backdrop of the full moon in the midnight sky, ziro jungles, and mountains”.[30]Bollywood Hungama rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya works due to its novel idea, memorable performances, captivating climax, and VFX”.[31] Dhaval Roy of The Times of India rated the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and wrote ” Director Amar Kaushik handles both genres skillfully in his latest outing and strikes a fine balance to deliver a movie that’s spine chilling in some instances, rib-tickling in almost all, and leaves you with something to think about.”[32] Tushar Joshi of India Today rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “Performances feel genuine and Kaushik’s USP of infusing humour and wit at the right moments helps in keeping the narrative engaging and entertaining”.[33]Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya is both enjoyable and thought-provoking, is helped along by lively performances. Varun Dhawan gives the unconventional role his best shot. Abhishek Banerjee and Paalin Kabak are terrific as much with their comic timing as with their dramatic flourishes”.[34] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare rated the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote “The film’s creature effects and computer generated imagery is excellent. Cinematography and the background score are good as well”.[35]Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Varun Dhawan does a good job of aligning with the tone of the film– the horror is pretty much ‘naam-ke-vaaste’, comedy is what it is interested in and does it well”.[36] Rohit Bhatnagar of The Free Press Journal rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya is a good one-time popcorn entertainment and a decent distraction from the monotony”.[37] Sonil Dedhia of News 18 rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya has a message that resonates with current times. The film has its heart in the right place but it falters in its execution and writing”.[38] Sukanya Verma of Rediff rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Varun Dhawan ups his entertainer game exponentially in Bhediya“.[39]
In a less positive review, Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost rated it 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote, “Bhediya is not the first film in this world to sideline characters from social groups sidelined in reality, even while purportedly being about those communities… All the noble intentions in the world and even Abhishek Banerjee’s comedic genius cannot compensate for such mindlessness.”[40] Himesh Mankad of Pinkvilla rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “Bhediya rides primarily on the strength of gags, visual effects, and performances, but warranted a bigger conflict with regard to a hero and villain in the second half”.[41] Umesh Punwani of Koimoi rated the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote “You’ll come in for Varun Dhawan, but will stay back for Abhishek Banerjee”[42]
Rahul Desai from Film Companion wrote: “Bhediya is silly, stylish – and surprisingly poignant”

Plot
Kuldeep “Kukoo” Saini and Nainaa Sharma marry each other, having loved each other ever since they had gone to school together. The couple relocate to Toronto, Canada for Nainaa’s job in a corporate company while Kukoo is employed as a bouncer in a nightclub. Within five years, the couple’s marital life gets strained due to prolonged silences, unfinished conversations and resentful hearts while Nainaa is offered a new position as the vice-president of HR at New York City and Kukoo is frustrated with his job. On their wedding anniversary, Nainaa and Kukoo confess to each other about their stressed marital life and plan to divorce each other once Kukoo’s sister Ginny is married. They fly to their hometown Patiala,India for attending Ginny’s wedding with Baljeet and are received by Kukoo’s happy parents Bheem and Geeta and Ginny. Nainaa and Kukoo pretend to be happy, unwilling to disturb the vibes of Ginny’s marriage while Ginny has conflicted feelings for her former boyfriend, Gaurav instead of Baljeet.
As Nainaa’s boss urges her to decide soon about her promotion, she insists Kukoo to reveal about their divorce plan to his parents. Kukoo parties with his father Bheem and tries to tell him about his plans to get separated from Nainaa but rather learns that Bheem intends to divorce Geeta after Ginny’s wedding. Puzzled, Kukoo attempts to confront Bheem and is informed of the latter’s extra-marital affair with Kukoo’s mathematics teacher in 12th grade, Meera. Meanwhile, Nainaa becomes frustrated when the women of the house arrange for a small prayer for her to bear children and angrily discloses about her plans to get separated from Kukoo to her mother and Geeta. Next morning, a shocked Geeta confronts Kukoo and Nainaa and tries convincing them to sort their problems out. Frustrated when Bheem tries to do the same as Geeta, Kukoo reveals Bheem’s affair with Meera to Geeta and Nainaa, shattering the former while Bheem fakes a heart stroke to earn sympathy and requests the doctor, their family friend to play along with his act.
Meanwhile, Geeta plans to unite Bheem and Meera after Ginny’s wedding and informs them, Nainaa and Kukoo of the same at a temple much to everyone’s despair. Due to Geeta’s act, Kukoo picks up an argument with her and Nainaa at home, leaves the house and drinks with Gurpreet, his best friend, confidant and Nainaa’s elder brother. At night, Bheem leaves the house to live with Meera but the latter doesn’t wish to be with him as she feels that she could never be like Geeta. When Kukoo meets Bheem on the road, the latter pretends to have left Meera for good and realized that Geeta is his better half. Convinced of his act, Geeta forgives Bheem while Ginny, who is unaware of all the drama taking place at her home, arranges for her parents to renew their wedding vows on the occasion of their wedding anniversary. On the day of Geeta and Bheem’s re-wedding, Kukoo and Gurpreet call Meera to mock her as Bheem “kicked her out” in favour of Geeta but realize that it was Meera who rejected Bheem. Infuriated by his father, Kukoo simultaneously discloses it all publicly and insults Bheem, for which Geeta slaps Kukoo but ultimately decides to file for a divorce.
Having learnt of Kukoo and Nainaa’s plans of divorce and her parents’ conflict, Ginny bursts out about her insecurity in marrying Baljeet as she still loves someone else while she was all along ready to marry Baljeet as Geeta had once assured her that everything would be right after marriage whereas it did not work out for both the couples. The divorce proceedings begin for both the couples. While Bheem and Geeta are given six months by the court to reconsider, Kukoo refuses to accept for divorce, apologizing to Nainaa for not being part of her success all along and being jealous of it instead. They reconcile and set to leave for New York City while Bheem plans to reconcile with Geeta within these six months, having realized his selfishness and also thinks of having Ginny marry Gaurav.

Plot
Azad is the jailer of a women’s prison in Mumbai who hijacks a Mumbai Metro along with a group of six inmates Lakshmi, Eeram, Ishkra, Kalki, Helena and Janhvi. Azad negotiates with NSG officer Narmada Rai to ask the Agriculture Minister to send ₹400 billion in exchange for the passengers’ lives. Kalee Gaikwad, a global arms dealer, learns that his daughter Alia is also one of the captives and agrees to fund the deal. When Alia questions their motive, Azad reveals his plan of donating the money towards the loan waiver of 700,000 impoverished farmers in the country. Azad and his gang directly transfer the funds into the farmers’ bank accounts and escape from the metro. Through Alia, Azad reveals his name as Vikram Rathore to Kalee.
Meanwhile, Azad meets Narmada and her daughter Suchi, and they eventually get married. Azad and his gang next kidnap the Health Minister and demand to introduce better infrastructure at every government hospital, in exchange for the Health Minister’s life. The infrastructure is immediately upgraded in the hospitals, allowing Azad and his gang to escape again after a shootout between Narmada and her team. Soon after their wedding, Narmada finds out about Azad’s true identity and confronts him, but Kalee’s brother Manish and his henchmen capture and torture them. However, Azad is saved by his doppelgänger named Vikram Rathore. Narmada finds out the identities of Azad’s accomplices and confronts them by disguising herself as an inmate, where she learns about Azad and Vikram’s connection.
In 1986, Captain Vikram Rathore was a commando in the Special Ops unit of the Indian Army, who set out on an operation to hunt down the terrorist group responsible for attacking and killing 40 Indian soldiers. After facing several casualties that were caused by malfunctioning weaponry, Vikram and his team successfully took down the terrorists and filed a complaint against Kalee, who was the supplier of the weapons. He unsuccessfuly tried to make a deal with Vikram and that same night, he and his wife, Aishwarya, were attacked by Kalee and his henchman, Murad. Kalee took Vikram onboard a plane and seemingly shot him to death. Aishwarya was sentenced to prison for killing three cops, who were on Kalee’s payroll. Afterwards, Vikram was declared a national traitor; Aishwarya gave birth to their child, Azad, in prison. When Azad turned five, Aishwarya asked him to prove his father’s innocence and provide justice to the oppressed, before she was hanged. Unbeknownst to the world, Vikram survived the attack but lost his memory. He was found and rescued by a tribal group in northeast India and rehabilitated in their village.
Back in the present day, Narmada’s subordinate Irani is revealed to be on Kalee’s payroll, where he tries to kill them in the prison and Lakshmi is killed in the resulting crossfire. Azad arrives at the prison and kills Irani in a stampede. Vikram, Azad and his team attack Kalee’s trucks, which contains money for the upcoming elections that will be used to boost Kalee’s political ambitions. Azad and his team manages to steal the trucks, while Vikram and his team get captured by Kalee’s henchmen. Azad releases another video and states that he has stolen voting machines and demands to seal 253 factories in the country, responsible for air and water pollution. The factories are sealed by the government. Kalee learns about Azad’s location in the women’s prison and a fight ensues, where Vikram finally recovers his memory and helps Azad by hanging Kalee to death. A few months later, STF officer Madhavan Naik, who was the one who helped Azad in the completion of his missions, assigns Azad a new mission of targeting Swiss Banks.

Development
In late 2019, it was rumoured that Shah Rukh Khan would team up with Tamil film director Atlee.[15] Atlee confirmed the project while promoting Bigil.[16] During COVID-19 lockdown in India, Atlee narrated the story to Khan in 2020, through Zoom call.[17] In May 2021, it was reported that the filming would commence soon.[18] The film is produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment, while Gaurav Verma serves as a co-producer.[19] The company made a public announcement on 3 June 2022, confirming the project.[20] The film was made on a budget of ₹300 crore.[21]
Atlee co-wrote the film’s script along with S. Ramana Girivasan, in his fourth consecutive collaboration with the director.[22] Sumit Arora contributed the dialogues.[23] Atlee further retained most of his norm technicians including cinematographer G. K. Vishnu, editor Ruben, art director T. Muthuraj and stunt director Anal Arasu.[24] Spiro Razatos,[25] Craig Macrae,[26] Yannick Ben,[27] Kecha Khamphakdee[28] and Sunil Rodrigues also were hired as stunt directors.[29][30] Dance choreographers of the film includes Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Shobi and Lalitha.[31]
Casting
Mukesh Chhabra was the casting director.[32] Khan was reported to play a dual role, as father and son, and would be seen in six different looks.[33]Nayanthara was finalised as the female lead opposite Khan, thus marking her Hindi cinema debut.[34]Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra and Yogi Babu later joined the cast. Reuniting with Khan after a decade, Babu last acted opposite Khan in Chennai Express (2013)[35] however, he was only present in the Tamil version.[36]Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined citing health issues and thus the role went to Vijay Sethupathi.[37]Deepika Padukone joined the cast in August 2022 in Chennai to shoot her special appearance.[38] In September 2022, Vijay was reported to be making a cameo in the film,[39] but later Atlee denied the news clarifying that he himself was making a cameo.[14] In March 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast to shoot for a cameo during an action scene.[40]Allu Arjun was approached to play a cameo but declined the role citing commitments to Pushpa 2.[41]
Principal photography commenced in September 2021 in Pune.[42] Some scenes of Jawan were filmed at the Sant Tukaram Nagar metro station in Pune from 30 August to 15 September 2021. Filming took place on the Pune Metro. The station also appeared in the film’s poster where Khan appears to sit at the metro station.[43] It is the first film to be shot at Pune Metro.[44] Khan resumed the shoot in June 2022 in Hyderabad.[45] Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara joined the 10–days shoot.[46] Nayanthara joined the Mumbai schedule on 26 June 2022, after her marriage.[47] Some family sequences were shot during this schedule.[48]
In August, the next schedule started in Chennai, where Deepika Padukone shot her cameo part.[49][50] Later Vijay Sethupathi joined the shoot. Some action sequences between Khan and Sethupathi were taken in this schedule.[51][52] The song “Zinda Banda” was shot during this schedule, in jail.[53] The song, which shot for 5 days included 1000 dancers, and was choreographed by Shobi Paulraj.[54] The song was also reshot for the Tamil version as “Vandha Edam”.[55] A month long Chennai schedule was wrapped on 7 October.[56][57]
The next schedule was held in Rajasthan, in October.[58] Khan and Nayanthara joined this 20–day schedule.[59] Next schedule was held in February 2023,[60] where Khan shot some chase scenes.[21] Sanjay Dutt joined the shoot on 20 March 2023,[61] to shoot an action-packed cameo.[62] In April 2023, a song titled “Chaleya” featuring Khan and Nayanthara was shot at Mumbai and Bandra–Worli Sea Link.[63] Later the same month, the song “Faraatta” featuring Khan and Deepika Padukone, for her cameo appearance was shot at Film City, Mumbai.[64] Both the songs were choreographed by Farah Khan.[65] In mid July, song titled “Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya” featuring Khan and Nayanthara, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant was shot at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai.[66][67]
Post-production
Post-production for the film began in January 2023 and went on for six months as the film involves extensive computer graphics and visual effects.[68] Editing was handled by Ruben.[69] The VFX work of the film is done by Red Chillies VFX.[70] Harry Hingorani served as the visual effects supervisor with Keitan Yadav as the VFX producer of the film.[71] In April, the company hired visual effects technicians to the team.[72] Ken Metzker of Red Chillies Color did the colouring for the film.[73] Kunal Rajan served as the sound designer.[74]
Nayanthara dubbed for her character in early May 2023.[75]Deepa Venkat dubbed for Nayanthara for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film.[76]Raveena Ravi dubbed for Deepika Padukone for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film.[77]
According to Khan, the theme of the film is “women empowerment”.[79]
One of the key characters in the film, Dr. Eeram, portrayed by Malhotra, is inspired by real-life events and individuals. Dr Kafeel Khan, who hails from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, serves as the inspiration for this character. Dr Khan became widely known for his involvement in the 2017 Gorakhpur hospital deaths. He was arrested and faced legal troubles related to the incident, which brought attention to systemic issues within the healthcare system. In the film, Dr. Eeram’s character likely explores themes of medical ethics, responsibility, and the challenges faced by healthcare professionals.[80]
Another intriguing aspect of the film is a scene featuring Vikram Rathore and Kalee, played by Khan and Sethupathi respectively, which draws inspiration from the Bofors scandal. The Bofors scandal was a major political and financial controversy in India related to the purchase of Bofors howitzer artillery guns for the Indian army. The scandal revolved around allegations of corruption and kickbacks in the arms deal, which had a significant impact on Indian politics and defence procurement. In the film, this scene sheds light on issues of corruption, political intrigue, and the consequences of unethical decisions made in high-stakes situations. Furthermore, the character Kalee is referred to as AB Bofors. This likely signifies a symbolic representation of the scandal itself, emphasizing the role of individuals and entities in larger scandals and controversies. Kalee’s character serves as a metaphorical link to the Bofors scandal, exploring the themes of accountability, responsibility, and the impact of corruption on society.[81]
The soundtrack is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, working with Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee for the first time; this would also mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score for Jersey.[82] Initially, A. R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.[83] Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh was chosen to compose for the film.[84] The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore,[85] which was a record price for a Hindi album.[86]
The soundtrack consists of seven original songs composed by Anirudh, namely, “Zinda Banda”, “Chaleya”, “Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya”, “Aararaari Raaro”, “Jawan Title Track”, “Faraatta” and “Chaleya” (Arabic). Lyrics are written by Irshad Kamil and Kumaar.
Marketing
On 3 June 2022, the film’s title and release date were unveiled through a teaser video featuring Khan in a suspicious character, wounded and swathed in bandages, foreshadowing an intriguing tale of revenge.[87] Later the film got postponed and a new release date was announced through a motion poster released on 6 May 2023.[88] A teaser trailer, titled “Jawan Prevue” was released on 10 July 2023.[89] It became the most watched Indian teaser in 24 hours with over 112 million views.[90] Subsequently, the teaser was attached to the prints of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Jailer and Gadar 2 for theatrical screenings.[91][92]
In July 2023, when the song “Zinda Banda” was unveiled, the hook step, choreographed by Shobi Paulraj and performed by Khan in the music video, quickly went viral, adding to the song’s popularity and becoming a social media sensation.[93] Many people have recreated the hook step (signature step) by recording their own dance performances to the song and sharing these videos across social media platforms.[94]
As a part of the film’s promotions, carried by GM Modular, the marketing team designed the film’s posters at the Mumbai Metro and subsequently, at the Kolkata Metro.[95] The official merchandise of Jawan was launched by Fully Filmy on 25 August 2023.[96]
The official trailer of the film was unveiled on 31 August 2023.[100] On the same day, Khan arrived in Dubai to celebrate the release of the trailer with the fans and showcased it on the Burj Khalifa.[101][102] Following the film’s release, Google introduced an interactive doodle dedicated to the movie, allowing users to engage with and explore the film’s theme in a creative and fun way.[103][104]

Jawan was theatrically released on 7 September 2023 in standard, IMAX, 4DX and other premium formats in Hindi along with dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu languages.[105][106] Initially, the film was slated for release on 2 June 2023. However, in May 2023, it was reported that the film is delayed to August 2023.[107][108][109] Additionally, there were reports indicating that the film might still be released on its originally scheduled date.[110] However, later it was confirmed that the film will release on 7 September 2023.[111]Jawan is the first Indian film to release in the IMAX Leonberg, the largest IMAX theatre in the world.[112] It is also the first Indian film to release in Bangladesh on the same day as its worldwide release, just like in other major countries.[113]
Jawan premiered on over 10,000 screens worldwide, highest for a Hindi film and one of the highest for an Indian film.[114] In India it released on over 5500 screens and 4500 screens in international markets.[115] In Tamil Nadu it was reported to showcase on over 650 screens and in Kerala version on over 350 screens, highest for a Hindi film in the regions.[116] The early morning shows, were held at 2:15 am across Bengal.[117]
Jawan set the record the largest advance bookings in Hindi cinema, surpassing the record previously held by Khan’s own film, Pathaan released earlier in the year. This record was achieved in both single-screen theaters and multiplex chains.[118] Booking sites of multiplex players crashed down due to high traffic.[119][120]
The film was screened at the Himalayan Film Festival in Leh on 30 September 2023.[121]

The website’s consensus reads: “Packed with plot twists and breathtaking action, Jawan manages its convoluted plot and imposing length with high-octane panache.”[156]
Awarding the film 4 stars out of 5, Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com commended Jawan‘s political storytelling, writing that it “boldly and directly points fingers at the ineffective government and appeals to recognise the power of the finger and vote”.[157]The Indian Express‘s Shubhra Gupta wrote that the film delivered a timely political message despite being “fashioned as an unabashed massy entertainer”.[158] Monika Rawal Kukreja of Hindustan Times termed it a “massy, meaningful actioner”.[159] Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in believed that the film worked primarily due to Khan, writing that his “screen image – expansive, suffused with love, heroic in an old-fashioned way without being aggressively macho, irreverent but also sincere – helps sell a conceit that might have crashed with any other actor”.[160]India Today‘s Tushar Joshi believed that Khan’s performance and Atlee’s direction had improved upon a typical, Robin Hood-esque story.[161]
Sonil Dedhia of News18 labelled it a masala film, adding that it is an “ambitious vigilante action thriller that plays to the gallery and lives up to the hype. Far-fetched in writing but high on star power and style”.[162] Renuka Vyavahare of The Times of India believed that Jawan had more of a story and purpose than Khan’s previous release Pathaan.[163] Trade journalist Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama awarded the film 4.5 stars and praised its “superlative performances, thrilling and clap worthy moments, larger-than-life action sequences and a never-before-seen avatar of Shah Rukh Khan”.[164] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare noted that the action choreography was “on par with any high grade Hollywood film”.[165]Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV rated the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and concluded, “Packed with all the ingredients that you would expect in a high-octane action film, Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed.”[166] In a negative review, Mint Lounge‘s Uday Bhatia termed Jawan a “chaotic mess”, writing that the film’s story did not cohere despite Khan’s best efforts.[167]
Internationally, Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News compared an ageing Khan to George Clooney, praising the star power of Khan and Nayanthara and the chemistry between Khan and Padukone.[168] Mike McCahill of The Guardian also commended Khan’s star power and opined, “Jawan covers a lot of ground in surprising fashion at full throttle – but that’s also a polite way of admitting it’s utterly all over the place.”[169] Proma Khosla of IndieWire praised Atlee’s work, Anirudh’s music and acting performances of lead actors. She felt that the film “must be experienced on a massive screen with a massive crowd”.[170] Alan Ng of Film Threat commented “Jawan is a reminder of what action movies used to be”.[171] In his review for RogerEbert.com, Simon Abrams stated, Khan “looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers”.[172]
